Sometimes I feel like giving up, but I just can’t. It isn’t in my blood.
— Shawn Mendes. In My Blood
There was a little Canadian kid, who was always dreaming about being a known artist. He started playing the guitar at the age of 14, by watching YouTube videos. In 2012 he posted his first cover “Hometown Glory”, after this he received bad commentaries from his classmates but he never gave up. A year later Shawn became a bit more famous thanks to Vine. In 2014 he released his self-titled EP, and increased his popularity. He signed with Island Records for his first album “Handwritten”, with amazing hits like “Something Big” and “Stitches”.
Nowadays he counts with 3 Grammy nominations, he has been listed on the 2018, 100 TIME list, he has 47,772 million listeners on Spotify and 54 million followers on Instagram.
But how it’s his music like? His music is influenced by the singer John Mayer and different music styles like Pop, Pop Rock and Folk Rock. It’s no surprise to say that most of his songs have a romantic meaning, and that’s why (besides his good looks) he has captivated the attention of teenagers. The interesting part of Shawn’s career, is how his music infers people, for example in the single “Treat You Better” he speaks about gender violence, and its problems.
By making songs that have deep meanings, you move people, you make them think and analyze real social problems we are living these days. Mendes has made a charitable foundation which objective is based in “youth-related causes” in areas like children’s healthcare, sustainability, mental health, human rights, anti-bullying and education.
In conclusion Shawn Mendes has changed the game rules, he has motivated his fans, and made something positive with his music and popularity. Even if you don’t like his music, is not possible to deny that he is a good person, trying to change the world in his on way.
